Protecting Your Eyes From The Sun

Protecting your eyes from the sun is a must during these sunny days of summer. Even though our eyelids are made for protection, the skin is so thin with fragile tissue that it is easy for sun rays to become overbearing. Sunglasses and hats are an excellent way to prevent any damage to your eyes — not to mention they can be used for styling up an outfit. So, for those of you who aren’t fans of hats or worried about getting tanlines on your face, here are some facts to keep in mind.

Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B light: According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) are powerful, invisible rays that are the most dangerous parts of sunlight. These rays can cause cataracts, cancers, and are a major cause of vision loss for people over the age of 60. These are also the rays that can wrinkle the skin (and we all know wrinkles are something that many people are hoping to avoid when aging).

High-Energy Visible light: High-Energy Visible light (HEV) or in other words, blue light, is another dangerous ray that can be harmful to the eyes. Blue light can rupture the retina over time, leading to muscular degeneration. If you are not familiar with what the retina is, it is a membrane where images are formed and transmitted to the brain.

Since these rays are so powerful, what kinds of sunglasses are recommended for the best protection? Looking for sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays and that absorb most HEV rays is highly recommended. Also, finding a pair with larger lenses or with a close-fitting design around the eye is also preferred for proper eye protection.

Another way to protect your eyes is by wearing a sun hat, such as this Calvin Klein one. Sun hats are a win-win since they provide protection for both your skin and eyes! So don’t take the sun “lightly”; go out and buy yourself a nice pair of shades or hat that will do the job at protecting your eyes.
